Google Is Answering Before People Click. Here’s How Indian Businesses Can Still Win in 2026
There is one question I keep hearing from business owners lately: “My Google ranking is the same as last year. So why are fewer people calling?”
They are not imagining it. Google has quietly changed what a search looks like. For a lot of questions, the first thing you see now is not a list of ten blue links. It is an AI-written answer at the top of the page, with a handful of sources tucked inside it. Many people read that answer, get what they need, and never click anything.
If you run a business in India, this matters more than any algorithm update you have heard about. The good news: it is very fixable. Here is what is actually happening, and what I would do this month if I were in your shoes.
What changed in Google search
Google now shows AI Overviews (the summary box at the top) for a growing number of searches in India, especially “how to”, “what is” and “best way to” questions. It has also rolled out AI Mode, a chat-style search where people can ask follow-up questions without ever opening a website.
Industry studies so far agree on one thing: when an AI answer appears, fewer people click through to websites, and informational searches are hit the hardest. Searches with clear buying or local intent, like “cake shop near me open now” or “best physiotherapist in Sector 62”, still send plenty of customers to businesses. The rules for winning them have just shifted a little.
Why your old SEO playbook is not enough anymore
For years, SEO meant one goal: rank on page one. Today there is a second goal sitting right on top of it: be the source the AI answer quotes. If Google’s summary mentions your business, your tips or your prices, you get seen even when nobody scrolls down. If it quotes your competitor, they get the trust and you get the silence.
AI answers tend to pull from pages that are clear, specific and trustworthy. Long, vague “ultimate guides” written only to stuff keywords are exactly the kind of content that gets skipped.
7 things to do this month
1. Make your Google Business Profile impossible to ignore
For local searches, your Business Profile often matters more than your website. Fill in every field, pick the right categories, add real photos every month, keep your hours correct (festival hours too), and post updates. This is free, and it is the first thing AI answers and Maps look at for “near me” searches.
2. Ask for reviews that actually say something
“Good service” helps a little. “Got my AC fixed the same evening, technician explained everything in Hindi” helps a lot, because it gives Google and its AI real details to repeat. Make it easy: send a short WhatsApp message with your review link after every happy customer. And always reply, even to the unhappy ones.
3. Answer real customer questions on your website
Open your WhatsApp chats and write down the ten questions customers ask you most. Do you deliver to Greater Noida? What does a basic package cost? How long does it take? Answer each one on your site in plain, direct language, ideally in the first two lines of the section. That is exactly the format AI answers love to quote.
4. Show your experience, not just your keywords
Add the things only you can say: photos of your actual work, how many years you have been doing this, a real example of a problem you solved, the name of the person behind the business. Google keeps rewarding first-hand experience, and AI systems lean on content that sounds like it came from someone who has actually done the job.
5. Clean up the technical basics
A slow website on a mid-range Android phone loses people before they read a word. Check your speed, make sure your pages are indexed in Google Search Console, and add simple schema markup for your business, services and FAQs. None of this is glamorous, but it decides whether search engines can read your content properly in the first place.
6. Be findable beyond Google
People now discover businesses on Instagram, YouTube, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google Maps, often in the same week. Keep your name, address, phone number and description the same everywhere. Short Reels that answer one question each (“How much does a website cost in 2026?”) work on Instagram today and feed search tomorrow.
7. Measure enquiries, not just traffic
In an AI-first search world, website visits can drop while calls and WhatsApp messages hold steady, because people arrive already convinced. So track what matters: calls, form fills, WhatsApp clicks and direction requests from your Business Profile. If those are growing, you are winning, whatever the traffic graph says.
A quick checklist you can screenshot
- Google Business Profile: complete, with fresh photos and posts
- At least 5 new detailed reviews this month, all replied to
- An FAQ section answering your top 10 customer questions
- Real photos, real names and real examples on your key pages
- Fast mobile pages, indexed in Search Console, with schema
- Same business details on Google, Instagram, Justdial and your website
- Calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks tracked every month
The bottom line
AI search is not the end of SEO. It is the end of lazy SEO. The businesses that will win are the ones that sound like real experts, look after their reviews and make it ridiculously easy for both people and machines to understand what they do.
Most of the list above takes a few focused afternoons, not a big budget. Start with your Business Profile and reviews this week, then work through the rest one by one.

Quick answers
Is SEO still worth it with AI Overviews?
Yes. AI answers are built from websites that rank and earn trust, so good SEO is how you get quoted. The focus just moves from chasing clicks to earning visibility and enquiries.
Do AI Overviews affect local “near me” searches?
Local searches with clear buying intent are affected less than general information searches. Your Google Business Profile, reviews and Maps presence matter most there.
How long before I see results?
Business Profile and review improvements can show up within weeks. Content and technical SEO usually take three to six months to build steady, lasting results.
